Support for Haiti

Dear SOS members and supporters,

Like many of you, our thoughts and prayers have been with the people of Haiti.

Right now, a number of SOS member surgeons have already deployed with other organizations and are assisting with emergency surgical care. SOS is not directly supporting relief efforts as our mission and expertise is in long-term surgical development, not emergency response.

We aim to collaborate with organizations currently working in Haiti and once the acute needs of the many affected Haitians have been met, we will use our experience to assist with the long-term reconstruction.

Having received numerous messages asking how to immediately help with the relief effort, we recommend donating either to:

Partners in Health, www.pih.org: Dr. Paul Farmer's organization that has been working in Haiti for over 20 years, and which is currently running hospitals that are still functioning. They have already sent teams of surgeons, more are on the way, and additional volunteer surgeons and anesthesiologists are being sought.

Doctors Without Borders, www.doctorswithoutborders.org: They have been working in Haiti for many years and are currently providing emergency surgical care.

We are also in contact with Operation Giving Back of the American College of Surgeons and more information on the surgical response in Haiti can be found on their website at

Thanks for your continued support,

Peter and Adam
